A prestigious pre-K to 12 co-educational day and boarding school located in Hobart, Australia, The Friends’ School is recognised not only for academic excellence but also for its provision of outstanding pastoral care at all levels of the school.

Friends’ is an independent, not-for-profit institution which is overseen by a Board of Governors and follows the Australian and IB curricular model. With a thriving student body of more than 1,300, the School cultivates a welcoming, supportive environment while equipping those enrolled with world-class skills through its International Baccalaureate (IB), Tasmanian Certificate of Education and Vocational Education and Training courses.

Principal's Message

The Friends’ School was founded more than 125 years ago by a group of concerned Australian and British Quakers as well as others to provide a school based upon the beliefs of The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). At the core of these beliefs is ‘there is that of God within everyone’. While designed to serve the needs of the Quaker families in Hobart and throughout Australia, non-Quaker families also sent their children to the School.

Samuel Clemes, the founding Principal, was considered a cutting edge educator. He based the curriculum of The Friends’ School on a ‘useful education’ with an emphasis on the sciences, mathematics and English as opposed to primarily studying the Classics. He also believed that boys and girls should receive a nearly identical education and be taught co-educationally instead of separately. Today, Friends’ continues its tradition of forward-looking educational philosophy.

Based upon the principles of integrity, respect, peace & justice, simplicity, community, equality and stewardship, The Friends’ School thrived and today comprises a community of about 1320 students, more than 900 families and over 200 staff.

Although there are few Quaker students and staff in the school, many parents choose The Friends’ School because the Quaker values align with those of their family.

Our Community

The Friends’ School is situated in the heart of Hobart, a city which is recognised as the most scenic, safe capital in Australia. While the city offers numerous stimulating art galleries and exciting cultural attractions, the smaller community is far more peaceful, holding fewer distractions and serving as an ideal study location.

Tasmania, Australia’s ‘island state’, hosts an area which is similar in size to Ireland, yet is home to more than half a million residents. The region offers spectacular, unique mountain and coastal scenery, with extensive national parks and World Heritage Areas protecting the island’s wilderness, wildflowers, rainforests and unique wildlife.
